Preventing falls at home: a room by room checklist

Most falls at home are preventable. Here is a practical room by room checklist of small changes that make a real difference.

A fall can change everything, and the effects go well beyond any injury. Confidence drops, people move about less, and doing less makes the next fall more likely. The encouraging part is that many of the risks around the home are simple and inexpensive to reduce.

Throughout the house

Start with the things that affect every room. Good lighting and clear floors do more than almost anything else.

  • Remove or securely tape down loose rugs and mats
  • Keep walkways clear of boxes, bags, cables and pet bowls
  • Fit brighter bulbs, especially on stairs and landings
  • Put a lamp or nightlight within reach of the bed
  • Check that slippers and shoes fit properly and have a good grip

Stairs and hallways

Stairs are the single most common place for a serious fall. It is worth being thorough here.

  • Make sure there is a secure handrail, ideally on both sides
  • Repair worn or loose carpet on treads
  • Keep the stairs completely clear, never used for storage
  • Fit a light switch at the top and the bottom

Bathroom

Wet, hard surfaces and awkward movements make bathrooms a high risk room. Grab rails must be properly fixed into the wall, as a towel rail or basin will not take a person's weight.

  • Fit grab rails by the bath, shower and toilet
  • Use a non-slip mat inside the bath or shower
  • Consider a shower seat or a raised toilet seat
  • Keep the floor dry and toiletries within easy reach

Kitchen

The aim in the kitchen is to remove any reason to climb, stretch or rush.

  • Move everyday items to waist height, never on high shelves
  • Never use a chair to reach a cupboard
  • Wipe spills straight away
  • Keep a phone or alarm within reach

Bedroom

Getting up in the night is a common moment for falls, particularly when someone is half awake.

  • Keep a clear, lit path from the bed to the bathroom
  • Have a lamp, phone and water within arm's reach
  • Make sure the bed is a comfortable height to stand up from

Beyond the home itself

Some risks are not about the house at all. Poor vision, dizziness on standing, unsteadiness and certain combinations of medication all raise the chances of a fall. If any of those sound familiar, a GP or pharmacist review is well worth arranging. Regular gentle activity also helps, because strength and balance improve with use.

When support helps

If someone has already had a fall, feels unsteady, or has become anxious about moving around alone, home care can reduce the risk considerably. Support with washing and dressing, help getting about safely and overnight care all make a difference.

Every Britz Healthcare care plan begins with a free home safety and risk assessment, which covers exactly the points above. Call 01302 870 161 to arrange one.
