Signs a loved one may need support at home

It is not always obvious when a loved one is beginning to struggle. Here are some common signs that extra support at home could help.

Families often tell us they wish they had noticed the signs sooner. Changes can be gradual, and many older people are reluctant to ask for help. Knowing what to look for means you can offer support early, before a small difficulty becomes a bigger problem.

Changes around the home

The home can tell you a lot. Look for unopened post, food past its date, a fridge that is emptier than usual, or housework that is being left undone. These can be signs that everyday tasks are becoming harder to manage.

Changes in personal care

You might notice a loved one wearing the same clothes for longer, finding bathing or dressing more difficult, or seeming less confident about their appearance. Struggling with personal care is common and nothing to be ashamed of, and it is something home care can help with sensitively.

Changes in mood or confidence

Withdrawing from hobbies, avoiding going out, or seeming low or anxious can all point to loneliness or a loss of confidence. Regular companionship and support can make a real difference to wellbeing.

Health and safety concerns

Unexplained bruises or a recent fall, difficulty with stairs or mobility, or forgetfulness around routines are worth paying attention to. A home assessment can help identify simple ways to make daily life safer.

  • Everyday tasks being left undone
  • Difficulty with washing, dressing or mobility
  • Weight loss or less interest in food
  • Withdrawing from friends and activities
  • Falls, unsteadiness or forgetfulness

Starting the conversation

Approach the subject gently and focus on staying independent at home, rather than on what someone can no longer do. If you would like advice, Britz Healthcare is happy to talk things through. Call 01302 870 161 or request a free care assessment.
